Report on Baltictech 2009

We have never had so many divers before. This time our conference was visited by more than 380 people, 30 exhibitors and 18 speakers. We distributed 30 awards founded by exhibitors and awarded Grand Prix Baltictech 09 prizes..

In a word, much happened but one thing at a time. Iwona Pomian from The Polish Maritime Museum and Janusz Gestwicki from Maritime Office in Gdynia started the lectures. They explained in a clear way how to organize wreck dives on an unknown position and how to deal with offices not to have unnecessary problems. Finally, they distributed sample forms needed to get all the permissions.

The second speaker Bruce Wienke, one of the most famous creator of decompression algorihtms, his lecture was very popular, many people regreted that it was so short and they couln't ask questions. They compensated it in the evening in the cafe where Bruce's table was besieged. Rasmus Lauritsen the third lecture told about CCR, in fact he compered 5 the most popular models presented on the market. After him, dr Mikołaj Wróbel started his lecture. It was the most surprising because his subject, theoretically not connected with diving that is 'Injuries of muscles, bones and joints' was the most popular at the whole conference.

It turned out that this subject concerns almost everybody and his talk got the best marks in our survey. During two-hour dinner break it was possible to familiarize with the equipment shown by exhibitors. In another room workshop on underwater photography and 'how to repair quickly dry suit'. After the dinner JP Bresser described to us the newest cave projects EKPP, in fact we could see a film about caves exploration in Spain.

After him inconspicuously looking Dmitri Gorski - Swede born in Russia in a very interesting way told about other dives in Sweden that is flooded mines and inconspicuous cave. His lecture about Baltic Latvian wrecks aroused the biggest interest. After this lecture a group of divers linked with Baltictech told in two-hour thematic block about the newest wreck projects in the Baltic Sea. So Sebastian Popek described in details Graf Zeppelin 09 project - 12 divers, 18 people in support, 2 doctors and 5 days at sea resulted in creating 6 hours of film materials and many pictures. What is the most important after this expedition the wreck was made available to dive for all people. Anders Nasman in scientific way told us about the preparation and realization of SeaHors project that is the examinations of the wreck of seventeenth-century sailing ship which lies 104 metres under the water 50 miles east of Stockholm. Then Krzysiek Wnorowski described the state of eighteenth-century sailing boat discovered in May 2008, near Hel. The conclusion was that her state is worse and worse. Maybe it is worth to organize like Swedes joint project which will lead to identification and inventoring of the wreck. After this speech Tomek Stachura described his the deepest dive on s/s Centric, steamer which sunk in 1914 near Aland Islands at a depth of 108 metres.

According to the programme the break for supper started, during the break the organizers feverishly counted the votes cast for the best Baltictech 09 photo.

After the supper the most waited part of the conference that is awards. While organizing Grand Prix Photo we expected maximum 20 works. The nice surprise was the fact that 60 works were presented to the competition and the fight for the second and third position was in place till the last moment.

Finally, the verdic of all participants of the conference was as follows:

1. place: Wojciech Surdziel / AG
2. place: Leszek Legat
3. place: Dariusz Zacharek

We publish their photos on the site.

After awarding Grand Prix the draw started, and there were many things to draw, we had about 30 precious awards including dry suit, 2 computers, reels, books, wings, harnesses and many more. Awarding Paweł Poręba with diving course by Piotr Duch stirred up the biggest emotions.

After these emotions everybody set off to a cafe and a pub where organizers founded beer. At the same time diving film night was taking place where a dozen or so films were shown. Everybody had good time as the last guests went to sleep about 4 a.m.

Sunday started early with a workshop 'How to start the adventure with technical diving'. The meeting conducted by Krzysztof Wnorowski araused better than expected interest and lasted one hour longer than we had planned, at the same time Robert Klein told us about the forerunners of cave diving in Florida. Just after him Lex Schotema described Holand from the diving point of view.

His information about saving the crabs enmeshed in abandoned nets stirred up understandable emotions. After the speech a few people offered themselves to spread this idead in Poland. Slowly, we were approaching the end, only open panel dedicated to CCR was left Rebreathers like their users stir up big emotions. This time it was the same, but the panel showed how big the thirst for knowledge about close and semi-close circulation is. There was only dinner left and time to come back home.

Saying good bye everybody stressed the great atmosphere and the need for such meetings, everybody declared participation in next year's conference. We take you at your words, thank you very much for this year's participation and see you in a year.
